The Education of Public Health Nurses in Finland
In Finland, it is possible to complete a combined degree in nursing and public health nursing as a unified programme. The total scope of this integrated education is 240 ECTS credits, including 180 ECTS credits of core nursing studies.
For those who have already completed a nursing degree, the public health nursing qualification can be pursued as a continuing education programme of 60 ECTS credits, with a target completion time of one year.
The studies are aligned with EQF Level 6, and graduates are licensed as both Registered Nurses and Public Health Nurses.
The programme offers an extensive and hands-on practical training component. At least 25 ECTS credits are dedicated to specialised public health nursing practice, completed as part of the professional studies.
Public health nursing students gain valuable experience across a wide range of key healthcare environments. Training takes place in diverse public health nursing settings, including:
- Child health and maternity clinics, population-based services, and family centres
- School and student health services
- Primary health care units, outpatient clinics, and walk-in services
- Occupational health care units
- Community nursing
- Public health and patient organisations, as well as voluntary work
This broad, practice-driven approach equips graduates with strong clinical expertise, a solid foundation in preventive care, and the adaptability needed to thrive across a wide range of health and social care settings.
The education is firmly grounded in evidence-based knowledge, up-to-date legislation, and the evolving health needs of the population.
Fully aligned with EU directive requirements, the programme ensures that graduates are highly qualified and ready to pursue international career opportunities.
